Why shipping weight changes the decision
A spreadsheet row often puts the item price in the most visible position. That makes sense for browsing, but it can hide the part of the decision most likely to change when the parcel is packed. Two similar rows can trade places once one item is heavier, bulkier, or harder to package efficiently.
Weight is not a reason to reject every substantial item. It is a reason to compare the whole situation. If a row gives no weight clue, note the uncertainty rather than silently treating it as zero.
Categories that tend to need a closer weight check
Shoes and sneakers
Footwear has shape and structure, and a box can add bulk. Size, sole material, and packaging choices can make apparently similar pairs different.
Jackets and hoodies
Thick fabric, lining, insulation, and larger sizes add weight. A light-looking photo does not tell you the fabric density or packed volume.
Bags
Frames, hardware, padding, and protective packing can matter. Dimensions may be as important as the item’s listed weight.
Electronics and rigid accessories
Components, cases, cables, batteries, and protective materials can add weight or trigger restrictions. Confirm compatibility and current official requirements.

Check the inputs before trusting a calculator
A shipping calculator is useful only when you can see the assumptions behind its result. Look for destination, actual or estimated weight, parcel dimensions, route, currency, date, and any service-specific conditions.

Practical habit: compare a lighter and heavier scenario. If the find only makes sense under the lightest assumption, the margin is too thin.
Why estimates are not guarantees
Spreadsheet weights can be incomplete, rounded, copied from an older source, or based on a different size. Packaging is not final until the item is handled.
